Coaching Steve Kerr – Reflections on my time with the greatest shooter in the NBA
As basketball coach graduate assistant with the University of Arizona open eyes in 1985, I felt like I had arrived. Working as a school coach for five years, provided a good experience, but never could have prepared me for the next 24 months. Knowing coach Lute Olson of my undergraduate studies at the University of Iowa has helped me this opportunity of a lifetime. My wife and I had just married a year ago and took this adventure with open arms. Both total working time and almost did not see enough time to catch up. Both agree that enter the profession College coaching would take every ounce of energy and creativity that we had. We were willing to assume this position two years on the Wildcat staff.
The 1985-86 season was only the third of many years that the Hall of Fame coach Lute Olson will walk away from Arizona. Reconstruction process started two years ago and drew a map for the great future program. Among those who signed Olson late spring of 1983 it was Steve Kerr, an Opie "Taylor seem southern California. He drew the attention of Olson in a championship game in late summer with its ability to from all over the floor. Least one step speed and a charge of athletics, Kerr took the opportunity and enrolled in Arizona fall.
Shortly after hitting the campus, it was obvious that Kerr had all the characteristics of a special reader. He Moxy knowledge and a veteran NBA guard to go with his long-range capability of shooting. Assimilated in the Wildcat program easily and become a leader in and immediately outside the ground. Kerr was the beginning of his third season at the College of the fall he joined the Arizona team.
Immediately after his arrival in Tucson I can pay full speed in my new position. Proclaimed a self-organizing phenomenon, I put in my new office. In fact, was a cinema with a narrow table against the wall. I worked in the area of the pond Jerry Kindall baseball if I had to. Since all tasks imaginable fills my days in. I moved my running mate, Tom Billeter, was also assistant professor and became inseparable for the coming two years. Recruitment, practice, weight, packaging, study table, game preparation and were part of the task and have taken 24 hours a day.
One months after our first season, he started to feel comfortable with the staff and equipment. Six freshmen of strokes in the list, including high school All-American Cholla proximity Sean Elliott SA. Was obvious from the outset that Kerr was so bad and competitive as they come. Nasty in the sense that nothing would be associated as a feature that coaches covet. When a mother duck is threatened, she will do anything to protect her cubs. Was it the same for Kerr. As Arizona basketball player Wildcat, who had his side Mother Goose. Kerr was the mother goose, proud and fiercely protected and represented his flock.
While the season progressed was Wildcat clear that his team had the ability to be very special. In the midst of the conference season, a championship could be heard whispering around the Pac-10. Finally, the scenario was ready for a party in Los Angeles with the legendary UCLA Bruins sweet. After winning in Pauley Pavilion at UCLA was the only obstacle that stood between the Wildcats and a championship. The Bruins were Reggie Miller and Kabbalah, retired Hall of Famer John Wooden, sitting in front of our bank in your favorite location. We had a future member Hall of Famer Lute Olson and a team led by Kerr, who was retained. By winning the game in Los Angeles this afternoon, Kerr appeared as the king of the cats. Nobody expected This team of young instructors make some noise this year. Perhaps in the way, but not this season, fans of thought. We flew home that night with the trophy champions of the Pac-10 and the taste of champagne.
Adjectives are often thrown to the players who stink of this rare capacity for leadership. The coach at floor, General, or glue are television advertisers terms of use. Steve Kerr was all of those involved in a package addressed. Moreover, their public image was an A +, as was his ability to speak as a Senator. Too good to be true? The icing on the cake was his ability to orchestrate his team to victory and, of course, his jump shot. I have fond memories of perfectionist Kerr, three shots around the perimeter in McKale Center the quiet late at night. Every night, success depended Cooking in meeting its share self imposed goals. Were forced to shoot when you are tired and to continue its work until the goal has been reached. Never Say Die, was his motto and spent every night in the shadow of his courthouse. Steve made us feel proud when he finished his career in the NBA 13 years as leader all time and three-point shooting percentage. His most famous shot came a smart pass from Michael Jordan in Game 6 of the 1997 ALCS. The buzzer beater a stamp the history of the Chicago Bulls to six championships. I've never been around or had the opportunity to lead a player who has all these qualities. Very few coaches have time.
