Clean, cheap hotel near the Santa Monica Pier Beach, CA?

I have searched through maps, reviews, and even tried Priceline (not accept) a descent hotel at 3-5 km from the Santa Monica Pier and Venice Beach. I have not had any luck! My budget is $ 70 per night. Need a clean room in a safe place. I would be able to drive to the beach in less than 10 minutes. I do not have quilts or a flat screen TV. Just enough space for my own family for two nights (June 16 Time of Arrival) and (June 18 Check-out). Does anyone have a personal experience that might help to think of a hotel? Well forget Santa Monica! This family beach I would suggest would be safe and offer lower rates hotel? Flight from LAX so please keep this in mind.
