Tip for color coordinating linens?

I inherited a king size bed for a roommate who has since be moved to another city. I am interested in buying a comforter for this bed, but the high cost of a quilt, I will not buy one. For coordination purposes, should I go with a neutral color or a completely neutral for the quilt? For example, all bed linen is now a dark red solid, no model. Thanks in advance for your help.
