These days not all twin size mattresses are equal, so it goes to say that we need to know the dimensions of our twin mattress before we go shopping for a comforter set.

A standard twin size mattress is 75 inches long and 39 inches wide and an extra long twin mattress is 80 inches long and 39 inches wide, so you clearly need to make sure you get the right comforter set or your bedding will just not cover sufficiently.

Twin comforter set sizing ranges from 66 – 68 inches wide to 86-88 inches long and depending on whether your mattress has a pillow top or not, will determine what size comforter set you need. Once you know the dimensions of your mattress, you’ll be ready to start shopping and in my experience it’s always better to get a bit wider than you need if possible as there’s nothing worse than rolling over on a cold night and getting uncovered!

Ooops….one more thing to consider is your comforter itself! If you have a down comforter and it’s thick and fluffy, this will also take up more room in the comforter cover as well, than if you have a thinner, lighter weight comforter or duvet.
