John Lund Interview with Jonathan Ross, founder of Blend Images
John: Jonathan, I know that you and your wife is Amy a team. Why?
Jonathan: We have gathered in a commercial photography program at the University 20 years ago. I had the door open for her on her first day of class, more intelligent than me. Chivalry can pay sometimes. School completed and opened a studio at once. Well, was actually a garage, but it was our sign on the door. That's where the name of Ross Andersen has arrived, our name before we married.
Juan: How do you divide your responsibilities?
It was first decided by some of our customers. 20 years ago he shot commercial work. It Believe it or not some customers do not want a woman as a photographer is not easy for us to accept at the moment but we had to keep the doors open.
Then we started to realize that Amy was much more business worry about me and I was more comfortable with a prosecutor over his shoulder during the shooting. Amy continues to be a photographer incredible and I think that when our children are gone, will become the true artist in the family.
John: I know you and Amy as pioneers and power plants free of duty in the Arena. You two are also founders of Blend Images, an agency providing both RF and photo given rights. You really have great experience in the photography market. Now I understand that putting your feet, or maybe just your foot in the water Stock Micro.
Mix has been an important part of our race, not just the financial side, but through all the extraordinary people we have learned to know and work with, and make great friends and mentors. For photographers around such sharp increase the quality of our work. I always found it best to play ball with the players more skilled than yourself if you want to improve your self-Thu
The mix was really the birth of Community action photography. Like what has become in the micro, right into a much larger scale. Before the action was a very private company.
We are also delighted to be the owners Culture Images a collection of images of European lifestyle managed by another amazing group of professionals.
We have libraries in every pot. RM and RF Micro. Every year time and budget spent on R & D. Like 10 years ago when you started the macro RF, we tested the waters and found a good investment. This year has been the Micro and we shot a few thousand images to get a good feel for this booming market. We still produce all models of the actions, but considers it important continue to participate and understand the changes in our market.
John: Micro stock has been around for quite some time. some stars Yuri Arcurs, and can make money consistently impressive. RM traditional shooters and RF Micro markets are also moving. The landscape is changing stock Micro.
Changes almost daily, it seems. I do not know where the future of the micro happens, but we felt it was important to participate in evolution. More eggs in different baskets is our motto.
John: Can you talk a little about the possibility exists, as can be see, in the Micro?
I like to make calculations, and is largely why Micro occurred last year. We want relevant information right so that we invest adequately in the future. Micro I have seen an increase returns but who have failed our Macro RPI is, however.
I see changes in the future microphone. A change that I might happen Micro niche-style sites. How to Blend Images is a collection of multi-ethnic culture is based on the content. I see something this effect in the corner to make it easier for buyers to find the images they need on the Micro.
Microorganisms also more selective with its content and those which are image providers, as well as the macro is today. Today almost anyone can download content for micro, once pass the technical qualifications. Maybe we'll see Micro collections are by invitation only providers strongest image. Tomorrow is another day, and Unfortunately, my crystal ball is in the shop.
Juan: Do you think everyone should be in the microphone?
I think it's a question that can not be answered by each person, since experience in this new computer model. Not everyone is made for all markets. Micro I can find on the best sellers for us are really the meat and potatoes of land values that you can see many sales. Not every photographer wants turn the meat and potatoes.
Juan: What photographers RM and RF stock the world know before your microphone?
A lot. These models are different and must be addressed differently. When we went to RM we could only get 10 to 30 images selected from several days to shoot. Micro, we can make 200 a day, but it takes a lot of choreography for this type of shooting account and not redundant.
Keeping costs down is a big part of the world Micro. There are also technical point of view, including the drafting of the main and download multiple sites at once takes some practice to work on the lights.
The good thing is that Micro is a feeling of freshness and enthusiasm of the photographers are sometimes difficult to find these days Macro shooters and I find it very motivating.
Juan: What is your approach different from taking RM and RF Micro?
RM and RF really depends on the image and the way that is specific buyers. If the image is produced, but can not be of interest to a select group of buyers who are willing to pay a premium for this unique image, then we tend to put in RM. RF Macro is again a higher value of output with fewer Micro similar, but aimed at a wider audience than our RM. Micro is our production less spending by the image and the work is very broad in their application, to try to attract as many buyers as possible and achieve a large market. We found the best works simple and clear right in Micro. We make a conscious effort to keep our micro and macro in different styles over time.
Juan: What think is the biggest challenge facing the shooters actions today?
There are many challenges in storage and has always been. However, I believe that evolution technology and capacity for the world to take a cheap camera to take a good photo is much easier than when I started. If 100,000 people over shooting year and each has 5 large photos are over 500,000 images in the market, with little for each of these 100,000 photographers. For the photo agency photographer full time makes it more difficult competition.
The diversification of the organizations that represent your pictures, looking at the coins and shoot buyers need to correct content I think the best way to stand up here today. old dogs need to adapt to this market, even in the RM and RF Micro Macro not only. Wow!
Juan: How to face this challenge?
The last two years, only worked like crazy to keep my income above where it had been in the past that yields began to decline. I noticed this winter I have been personally burned and do not like what I'm more or less the same. It took three months off for the first time since we opened our doors 20 years ago and feels reborn.
We left our staff to a single car producer and shooting needs. We also dumped our big studio and moved to a smaller office space as it grows mainly on the spot. Between these two cuts, we have reduced our costs by more than 65%. Now I can take less and spend more time creating images that are more difficult for the photographer a means to produce. I'm also having fun again and that is so important. If you're not having fun it shows in their work and quality of life.
Juan: How do you choose what to take?
It begins with the investigation. Sometimes it is a collaboration with one of our editors to meet a need you have. Also spend time looking for holes in the collections where the images are updated. Then, trying to stay involved in the evolution of society from which the colors are very popular in the how the world is changing and that the best images reflect these changes. Occasionally, based on a location that had access to this question is difficult to acquire.
A good reason for your lifestyle cooking is that after a few years these plans should be replicated and kept up to date to social change. We have chosen life, partly for this reason but also because we love working with people. Added at the same time as work, this is a team effort. From the model output for the photographer, is a blast. This year, efforts are the creation of believable slice of life that capture the raw emotion and focus on a positive future in a global market. Boy, that was bitten.
John: Why do more?
People are my favorite subject because of the interactions that occur between the models and me. I like to motivate people and positive energy action. In a good energy level shot is through the roof, it takes me hours to come to the animation. I love it. Children most important bill to me, they are not afraid to show who really are. The walls seem to go much faster than adults.
John: Are you involved in the market for fine arts?
I'm not really at that time, however, that is my plan to spend the last chapter of my career in making pictures. No I do not trust my works of art or a documentary work may have to pay the bills. I fear that I am creating what I see and I do not think others want to see that even make sense?
Juan: Andersen Ross How to manage post-production?
I have a great producer I have a contract post. I do not change, set the background color and density and crop in a small image file and then send the wizard makes perfect. I usually do all my own treatment at first but eventually found I was doing more click the camera more than they could produce and offset the cost of an individual entry to production and increase our income. I still post to my personal work.
John: You have a template?
Only my producer Laura Marchbanks me now and of course my wife Amy, who actually keep the company forward. Hired on a worldwide basis, as needed to help minimize costs. I prefer to keep a full staff, but that's part of adapting to market changes. It also means you do not get nearly the same amount to cover overhead expenses, leaving more time for family.
John: All plans to enter the video?
Yes, it is our R & D this year. We are working on an agreement with a production company that makes the color red. They worked in film production for years and will help us speed up front.
Instead to jump and just spending more money than we have seen this as an opportunity to see how much we appreciate all the work while obtaining an education and still revenue. The video company tried to find a door in the warehouse, how to produce and that's what we provide. It seems a
win – win situation.
John: How do you get your models?
I would say that is one of our high production areas, we have a book casting deep gratitude to my talented producers Laura Marchbanks graduated from Brooks. We cast-day trial in the study of new talents try to see how and what they might be used. We try to use the correct model for the power stroke that is his or her appearance. We use all the sources for these days Foundry Street dummies Craigslist and professional agencies. My children used to model maps of Pokemon, but their prices are too high nowadays.
John: You photographer influenced your career?
My principal gallery Bart Attebery followed changed my life and remained friends until his death last year. He was one of the first graduates of the Art Center. I've always liked to have mentors, people who encourage you and believe in yourself, on especially in these times in question.
I should add that when I was just starting my career, I read an article in PDN about a boy who made these images conceptual something called Photoshop. These images were so fresh and exciting that really opened my eyes to the future of what photography could be. What John and I have been to continue to work as a schoolboy. The other photographers are not painters, Dali and Peter Max had an effect on me as a child.
Juan: In the long term, they are optimistic or pessimistic about the industry of stock photography?
That's all I want to do, even if I'm a little skeptical, sometimes I'm not going anywhere. One thing is for sure, but life changes and maintaining or even ahead of these changes can be considered as an argument or a source of inspiration to press, I prefer the latter.
John: Any words of wisdom leave us?
If I have a problem with the team, I must say that is the need to reassess the level of prices in the small web images. When the reserve began in line with macro-organisms RF establish a set of price points based on file size. This was even 10 years ago when the web was still a baby. Jump forward ten years and today many Web sites reaching more buyers than print does. However, we still have a very low price points for small files that are sufficiently large to be used by companies represented on the Web.
I think it's time for a change in this area of pricing actions and changes in size. Or to display prices in small web image format or delete the small size together. I do not understand why a print publication pays more than a website is this time. It must be based on something else, then the image size to determine the appropriate price level.
My local paper just sounded Press Site two weeks ago and I think we will see even more in the future. If photographers can stay in business, I think these price levels must be addressed by a change in how culture is the exchange of information and how advertisers reach their buyers.
For the next few years, this pot is bubble and rotation, I would say that to reduce costs. Do not buy this new camera this year, unless you make more money. The research is an important part of the game more than ever. Do your homework and get the ducks in a row before you spend your money on a film. Investment in R & D and try to stay true to his vision simply copy what you see working for others or have already been shot. Most have as much fun as possible, which is still the largest prizes, financially and personally.
